Freeport is a coastal town that has so many stories to tell

Most people believe that Freeport is the capital of Grand Bahama Island. However, it is not like that, the capital is West End, a coastal town that has so many stories to tell.

Located at the western end of the island, West End is the oldest settlement. The Lucayans inhabited the island from 500 BC. C.; they became extinct in 1520 at the hands of the European conquerors.

In 1836, the West End had only 370 inhabitants; it was the Prohibition era that provided job opportunities, when it became a hub for shipping alcohol to the United States. After that the community went back to fishing; the bonefish or bonefish from this area were also coveted by Hemingway.

West End lives on fishing and tourism, which has flourished in recent decades thanks to large investments, especially in Old Bahama Bay, the marina that welcomes yachts.

But, West End is not the only curiosity of Grand Bahama Island. For example, a labyrinth has been recreated on the island reminiscent of a European one from 1200.

Within the Garden of the Groves (or Garden of the Groves), the Labyrinth replicates that of Chartres: it is the only green labyrinth in the archipelago of the Bahamas and aims to evoke the climate of spirituality with which it was created in France. The Labyrinth of Notre Dame de Chartres was conceived taking inspiration from Greek mythology, the episode of Daedalus who wanted to imprison the Minotaur. Do you remember the thread that Ariadne gave Theseus so that he could untangle himself and return safely after the fight with the monster?

In Freeport Viva is waiting for you at their resort in the Bahamas - Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach.

Viva is proud to offer you a situation where they have no "neighbors": the long beach is all for Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach guests! Open year-round, accessible within a 45-minute plane ride from Florida, the internationally spirited resort has a PADI dive center that organizes shark dives.

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach is the only one of Viva resorts that can also be reached by sea, thanks to the Balearia Caribbean ferries that depart from Miami; the distance is only 55 miles.
