According to the Airports Council International, the Cancun Airport surpassed Mexico City’s AICM with international traffic

The Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. According to the Airports Council International (ACI), the Cancun Airport surpassed Mexico City’s AICM with international traffic.

It has since made the top 10 list as one of the busiest in the world with international traffic. According to ACI, Cancun International ranked as one of the 10 airports with the highest international traffic worldwide during 2021, serving more than 13.2 million passengers.

These figures saw Cancun International rise from 61st place in 2019 to 10th position in 2021.

In the international passenger ranking, Dubai International Airport has remained the main venue since 2019, with 29.1 million passengers. This was followed by Istanbul Airport with 26.4 million passengers and Amsterdam-Schiphol International Airport with 25.4 million.

ACI’s passenger traffic rankings reflect an encouraging trend of recovery, with most of the busiest pre-COVID-19 airports returning to the top 10,” Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI director general, said in a statement.

Although we are cautious that the recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by the reopening plans of several countries could lead to a rebound in travel towards the second half of 2022.

Although the Cancun Airport is in tenth position, it is the venue that has had the fastest recovery in traffic in 2019. In Mexico, the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) remains the airport with the highest air traffic in the country, fed mainly by the domestic segment, but also with 17.6 international tourists in 2019.

However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cancun Airport has been the one with the highest international movement, which led it to close 2021 with 13.2 million passengers, higher than the 10.1 million AICM users.

In total passengers, eight of the 10 busiest airports worldwide are in the United States, while two operate in China, mainly fed by the domestic market. The top three in 2021 were Atlanta Airport with 75.7 million users, Dallas/Fort Worth 62.4 million passengers and Denver International Airport, which served 58.8 million travelers last year.
